Dr. Devanjan Khuntia

Dr Devanjan Khuntia teaches Sociology of Media, Urban Sociology, Crime and Deviance and Gender. His primary research frameworks are based on the complex relationships between neo-liberal global market economy, formation of social spaces, political economy of news media in contemporary India and its role in shaping public consciousness.

Dr Khuntia has been awarded PhD in Sociology from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems (Jawaharlal Nehru University) New Delhi. He has an M.Phil in Sociology from Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University; MA in Rural Development from (Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi); Post Graduate Diploma in Radio & Television Journalism from the Department of Film & Television Studies, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, (New Delhi); and a undergraduate degree in English Literature from Maharaja Agrasen College, Delhi University.

Dr Khuntia has served in various academic and research positions for various national and international universities such as University of Gottingen (Germany); National University of Singapore (Singapore); Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), and the Centre for Development Studies (India). He is also a trained Broadcast Journalist having served at various National Media houses in New Delhi and have expertise in crime and investigative journalism. He has received formal training on offline and online video and audio editing, radio broadcasting and cinema media production from the prestigious Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC) IGNOU Maidan Garhi New Delhi.

He has received prestigious Kulapati KM Munshi Award from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan New Delhi in 2006 towards producing an outstanding documentary film depicting the lives of  newspaper vendors in Delhi. The same year he also received Kulapati KM Munshi Award from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan New Delhi towards making a remarkable Radio feature programme – Ek Katha Bhrun Ki, depicting the social issue of female foeticide. The radio programme was produced specifically keeping in mind rural audience of the Hindi speaking belt of India. The programme was broadcasted regularly on Gyan Vani FM Radio 105.6 FM for several years.
