The Centre for Counselling and Health Services at Alliance University organised a wellness workshop titled "The Joy of Motion," designed to support students in building emotional resilience and self-awareness. The session aligned with the university’s ongoing efforts to promote Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
Focus on Emotional Wellness through Movement
The workshop aimed to help students reconnect with their body, mind, and emotions through mindful movement and somatic awareness practices. It offered an expressive platform for emotional regulation, stress relief, and personal insight without the reliance on verbal communication. The programme encouraged students to explore their feelings through physical expression, fostering a deeper understanding of emotional patterns and inner balance.
Facilitated by Expert Practitioner
The session was facilitated by Dr Swetha N, Associate Professor and Certified Dance Movement Therapy Facilitator accredited by UNESCO and the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI). Drawing on her expertise in creative movement and non-verbal communication, Dr Swetha guided participants through exercises that blended body movement with emotional exploration. Participants engaged in activities designed to heighten somatic awareness, offering a structured yet expressive environment that prioritised mental and emotional well-being.
Link to Global Health Initiatives
The workshop reflected the themes of World Health Day 2025, focusing on the concept "My Health, My Right," and underscored that mental and emotional health are integral parts of overall well-being. By creating opportunities for students to engage in alternative therapeutic practices, Alliance University reinforced its commitment to holistic student development. The focus on non-verbal therapeutic techniques added an important dimension to the university’s wellness initiatives, highlighting innovative strategies for promoting mental health in academic settings.
Active Participation and Student Engagement
Students participated with commitment and enthusiasm, exploring the connection between movement and emotion. The workshop provided a space where participants could express themselves freely, supporting a culture of openness and self-care. The high level of student involvement indicated a strong interest in integrative wellness practices and emphasised the need for continued inclusion of experiential health programmes within the academic environment.
Commitment to Health and Well-being
"The Joy of Motion" workshop is part of Alliance University’s broader strategy to support student health through preventive, proactive, and inclusive initiatives. Programmes such as these offer students new tools for coping with stress and maintaining emotional well-being, contributing to their overall academic and personal success. The Centre for Counselling and Health Services continues to design initiatives that recognise emotional and mental wellness as essential components of student life.
Conclusion
The "Joy of Motion" workshop concluded successfully, marking another step towards building a healthier and more mindful student community at Alliance University. Through creative movement and experiential learning, the session strengthened the university’s commitment to nurturing the emotional wellness of its students while aligning with global health and well-being goals.
