Innovative Technology: Smart Pill Dispenser Designed by Alliance University Students Makes Headlines
26 August, 2025

Students from Alliance University’s Centre of Excellence, Makerspace, Bengaluru have developed a Smart Pill Dispenser featured in Deccan Chronicle. Aimed at improving medication safety and adherence. The device has been designed to support elderly patients and those with cognitive impairments, helping them take their medicines correctly and on time.
A Student-Led Innovation
The project was conceptualised under the guidance of Dr. Harinath Aireddy, Director of Makerspace, and executed by students Sudhir R, Pavan Kumar J, and Shravani N, with support from technical officers at the University’s Centre of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing.
Speaking about the experience, Shravani N, Research Scholar at Makerspace, who led the design and 3D printing, said, “The project gave us the chance to apply our learning to a real-world challenge that affects millions of families. We wanted to help patients while giving caregivers peace of mind.”
Dr. Aireddy added, “This innovation shows the power of young minds when they are given freedom, purpose, and the right environment to solve real problems.”
Features of the Dispenser
The Smart Pill Dispenser is programmed with a seven-day schedule and has separate compartments for morning, afternoon, and evening doses. Automated voice reminders prompt patients to take their medicine, repeating every five minutes until the dose is collected. If a dose is missed, an instant alert is sent to a registered caregiver.
To enhance safety, the dispenser releases only one dose at a time, preventing overdosing. An inbuilt facial recognition camera ensures the right person takes the medication, while all missed doses are digitally logged for tracking. The device is equipped with a touchscreen and a mobile app, enabling caregivers to schedule medicines and monitor patients remotely.
Towards Safer Healthcare
More than just a device, the innovation reflects Alliance University’s commitment to applying knowledge for social impact. By combining automation, safety features, and caregiver connectivity, the Smart Pill Dispenser provides patients with timely access to medication while reducing the stress placed on caregivers.
