The Department of General Management, Alliance School of Business, organised a guest lecture on “From Data to Decisions: A Research Methods Approach” on 27 September 2025. The session was part of the Applied Business Research Methods course for students of the MBA (January 2025 batch) and was designed to demonstrate how research methodologies can be effectively applied to real-world business problems.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Thangjam Aditya, Senior Data Analyst at Rystad Energy, who specialises in AI-driven applications for energy analytics and data systems. The session saw the participation of 97 students and was coordinated by Dr. J. Shanthi and Dr. Semsang Bomzon.
Understanding Data Through Research
The event began with a formal welcome by Ms. Hency Mellisa, who highlighted the growing importance of research-driven approaches in managerial decision-making. Dr. Aditya began by explaining the role of structured research methods in improving strategic and operational outcomes for organisations. He discussed how data, when analysed systematically, can lead to more informed and effective decisions across industries.
Drawing on his experience in energy market analytics, Dr. Aditya explained how structured data pipelines, AI applications, and forecasting models can help convert raw data into actionable insights. He emphasised that while data is widely available, its value depends on the clarity of questions asked and the quality of interpretation. Through this perspective, he bridged academic research frameworks with practical business applications, showing how research supports strategic planning and innovation.
Demonstration of AI-Driven Tools
A key highlight of the session was Dr. Aditya’s demonstration of various AI-based research tools that are now integral to business analytics. Students were introduced to platforms such as Prophet Arena for predictive modelling, LM Arena for comparing large language models, Instant Data Scraper for automated data collection, and Google Dataset Search for locating datasets. Tools such as Notebook LM, North Data Smart Research, and Perplexity Pro were also discussed as examples of how artificial intelligence is transforming research and decision-making processes.
Dr. Aditya encouraged students to explore these platforms beyond classroom learning, emphasising how AI technologies can improve efficiency, reveal patterns, and enhance strategic decision-making in business contexts.
Insights on Careers in Data and Research
The session also covered career opportunities in the fields of business analytics, data science, and research consulting. Dr. Aditya outlined the skills and competencies required for roles that combine analytical rigour with practical business understanding. He explained that sectors such as finance, consulting, FMCG, and energy are increasingly seeking professionals capable of translating complex data into meaningful insights.
Throughout the lecture, students engaged in thoughtful discussions on the ethical use of AI tools, the future of research in a data-saturated economy, and the importance of maintaining critical thinking in technology-driven environments.
Key Learnings and Conclusion
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Athpathi, who expressed appreciation for Dr. Aditya’s clear and practical insights. Students left the session with a deeper understanding of how research methods can guide sound business decisions and how emerging AI tools are reshaping the way organisations use data.
By combining theoretical understanding with hands-on exposure, the lecture strengthened students’ ability to think critically, interpret data responsibly, and apply research for real-world problem-solving.
