As the field of design continues to evolve alongside rapid technological change, the need for designers to expand their thinking beyond interfaces has become increasingly important. Recognizing this shift, Alliance School of Design organized a masterclass to help students understand how to remain relevant in an AI-driven environment.
The Interaction Design Department at Alliance School of Design, in collaboration with the CAN Office, hosted a masterclass featuring Mr. Trivikram Annamalai, UX Manager at Google. The session focused on the changing role of designers and the skills required to adapt to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. Mr. Annamalai shared insights into how designers today must move beyond traditional screen-based approaches and begin to think in terms of systems, strategy, and broader impact. He discussed the growing importance of understanding AI not merely as a tool, but as a collaborator in the design process.
During the session, students were encouraged to reflect on the foundations of their design practice. Mr. Annamalai emphasized the need to build strong research capabilities and to approach design problems with clarity and intent. He highlighted that effective communication of ideas plays a key role in influencing outcomes and shaping user experiences. The discussion also explored how designers can adapt their thinking to work alongside AI systems, prompting students to consider not only how they design, but also the purpose and reasoning behind their work.
The masterclass concluded with a reflection on the evolving nature of design practice. While tools and technologies continue to change, the session reinforced that critical thinking, clarity of purpose, and thoughtful decision-making remain central to effective design. The interaction provided students with a grounded perspective on navigating the future of design, encouraging them to approach their work with a deeper sense of responsibility and awareness.
