The Central Library of Alliance University celebrated Librarians’ Day on 11 August 2025 to mark the 133rd birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, regarded as the Father of Library Science in India. The event honoured his legacy while highlighting the role of libraries in supporting learning, research, and knowledge sharing across the University.
Guests and Objectives
The occasion was attended by Dr. K. A. Venkatesh, Registrar (Examination and Evaluation), as Chief Guest, and Dr. P. Y. Rajendra Kumar, Former Director General of the National Library of India, as Guest of Honour. The programme was presided over by Dr. Prakash I N, Librarian, Central Library.
The celebration sought to honour Dr. Ranganathan’s contributions, recognise the service of library staff, and encourage greater engagement with library resources in today’s digital age.
Programme Highlights
The event began with an invocation and a welcome address by Dr. Prakash I N, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and garlanding of Dr. Ranganathan’s portrait.
In his address, Dr. Venkatesh reflected on his early experiences in library science and stressed the value of classification systems, pledging to adopt the Colon Classification as a tribute to Dr. Ranganathan. Dr. Rajendra Kumar, felicitated for his distinguished service, spoke on Dr. Ranganathan’s life and contributions, Karnataka’s pioneering role in observing Librarians’ Day, and the need to balance ethics with technological change.
Mementos were presented to Central Library staff in appreciation of their commitment and contribution to the University’s academic mission.
Conclusion
The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks and a group photograph. The event deepened awareness of Dr. Ranganathan’s legacy, strengthened professional pride among staff, and encouraged active use of library resources. It also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to continuous innovation in library services.
