Alliance University Model United Nations (AUMUN) 2021

Alliance University Model United Nations (AUMUN) 2021, a flagship MUN conference organized by the Alliance Model United Nations Society, Alliance School of Law in association with the Department of Student Support Services, was held virtually on 24-25th July 2021. The hallmark event was held for students from across the globe to debate, deliberate, and discuss contemporary issues in the fields of international law, relations, and politics.

In a world that is becoming increasingly hostile, overtly political, and unfairly exclusionary; it is not only essential for upcoming academicians and students to be aware of international issues, but the need of the hour was to enable them to take an active role in debating and policymaking around these issues. Keeping this idea in mind, AUMUN 2021 simulated four committees: General Assembly 1 – Disarmament and International Security CommitteeGeneral Assembly 6 – Legal CommitteeLok Sabha Fédération Internationale de Football Association.

 

Mr. Abhay Chebbi (Pro-Chancellor, Alliance University) inaugurated the AUMUN with an analytical speech on the role of the United Nations in the current turbulent times, followed by an enriching address on the importance of diplomatic negotiating skills by Dr. Anubha Singh (Vice-Chancellor, Alliance University).

Dr. Kiran Gardner (Dean, Alliance School of Law) made the opening remarks encouraging student participation in extra-curricular activities. Mr. Alind Chopra (Associate, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas) addressed the delegates and shared his experiences in debates and dispute resolution, followed by a note by Prof. Apoorva Tomar (Professor, Alliance School of Law) highlighting the agendas and committees of AUMUN. The conference was declared open by MrArkadeep Pal (Secretary-General, Alliance MUNSoc).

The Conference proceeded with the Executive Board members of the four committees facilitating the delegates to discuss and deliberate pertinent international issues. The General Assembly 1 – Disarmament and International Security Committee saw the discussion of the ongoing South China Sea Dispute. The General Assembly 6 – Legal discussed the legality of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Lok Sabha committee deliberated on the passing of the draft "Personal Data Protection bill & the Fédération Internationale de Football Association" reviewed the inclusion of the controversial video assistant referee in the game of football. The delegates, over two days, came up with insightful and innovative solutions through diplomatic discussions. The committees drafted resolutions that highlighted the solutions and created a blueprint for achieving peaceful international relations.

To stimulate the debate among delegates, the Executive Board in close coordination with the Secretariat selected outstanding delegates from each committee, each of whom were given recognition and cash prizes.

Besides receiving overwhelming responses from the delegates in favor of looking forward to a second edition of the conference, the conference was concluded with the valedictory session by the Executive Board. Dr. Varender Singh Patial (Director, Department of Student Services) delivered the vote of thanks, under which the conference was declared closed by Mr. Paarth Samdani (Director General, Alliance MUNSoc).
