Honouring the Vision of Vishwamanava
Alliance University observed Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Jayanti to mark the birth anniversary of Kuvempu, a distinguished figure in Kannada literature and thought. The observance aimed to reflect on his literary contributions and his philosophy of Vishwamanava, which speaks of universal human values and shared humanity.
The program was jointly organised by the Kannada Sangha, Kannada Bhasha Kendra, Department of Student Support Services, and the Centre of Excellence in Indian Knowledge Systems. The event was held in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka. Kuvempu’s ideals of peace, harmony, and universal brotherhood were central to the celebration, which was also observed as Vishwamanava Day in keeping with his vision of a united society.
A key segment of the programme was the special address delivered by the Chief Guest, Dr. Shivakumar, Director, Akka IAS Academy, Bengaluru. In his address, he spoke about Kuvempu’s lasting contributions to Kannada literature and reflected on the humanistic philosophy that underpins his writings. He highlighted Kuvempu’s engagement with issues of social justice and equality, and noted that the idea of Vishwamanava remains relevant in the present context. Dr. Shivakumar encouraged students to reflect on these values and consider their role in building a more inclusive society. His address offered thoughtful insights into Kuvempu’s literary approach and its broader social significance.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Yogeshkumar K., Associate Director, Department of Student Support Services, delivered the inaugural remarks. He spoke about the importance of nurturing values of universal humanism and emphasised the relevance of Kuvempu’s ideas within an academic environment.
The celebration also included a cultural program, featuring a musical concert by artist Rajesh V. Anekal. His performance added an artistic dimension to the event and offered a musical interpretation of Kuvempu’s literary legacy, which was well received by the audience.
The program saw active participation from heads of departments, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students from across the University. Dr. Mithun Hanumesh, Prof. Kasaniya Naik, Prof. Asharani N R, along with faculty members, staff, and students from various departments, were present on the occasion. The program was hosted by students Anushree and Monisha. The Chief Guest was formally introduced by Ms. Vibha V. Purohith, Kannada Research Scholar.
As part of the Jayanti celebrations, competitions were organised on the eve of the event. A multilingual essay competition encouraged students to engage with Kuvempu’s concept of the “Universal Man” and provided a platform for reflection, creativity, and expression across languages. These activities helped create awareness among students, faculty, and staff about Kuvempu’s life, philosophy, and literary work.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Vivekanand Sajjan. This was followed by the distribution of prizes to the winners of the competitions organised by the Kannada Sangha. The observance served as a meaningful reflection on Rashtrakavi Kuvempu’s life and ideas, and offered participants an opportunity to engage with his enduring vision of shared human values.
