Alliance University, through its Department of Fine Arts under the School of Liberal Arts, organised a two-day Pottery Workshop. The workshop was designed to offer students a hands-on introduction to pottery as a form of artistic practice, focusing on both skill development and creative exploration.
The workshop brought together students from the Bachelor of Liberal Arts (BLA) program and provided them with an opportunity to engage closely with clay as a material. Titled “From Earth to Expression: Exploring Form, Function, and Creativity through Clay”, the programme emphasised learning through making, observation, and experimentation.
Over the course of two days, participants were guided through the journey of clay from its raw state to finished forms. Students were introduced to fundamental pottery techniques such as hand-building, surface texturing, and basic form development. These sessions helped students understand how form and function interact in pottery, while also encouraging them to explore their own creative approaches.
Alongside technical instruction, the workshop created space for reflection and individual expression. Students were encouraged to work at their own pace, allowing them to develop patience and sensitivity towards the material. Each piece created during the workshop reflected the personal ideas and interpretations of the student, reinforcing the importance of process in artistic practice.
Faculty members and facilitators supported the sessions through continuous guidance and interaction, helping students connect theoretical understanding with practical application. The workshop highlighted the role of experiential learning in arts education and supported the broader academic objectives of the Fine Arts curriculum.
Students including Tushar Sachdeo, Aditi Gaur, and Shaima Fathima K A from the II Semester BLA program actively participated in the workshop and engaged with the learning process throughout the sessions. The experience contributed to their understanding of craft, material, and creative discipline.
Overall, the Pottery Workshop served as a meaningful academic activity that strengthened students’ appreciation for traditional craft practices while fostering creativity and hands-on learning. The Department of Fine Arts continues to organise such initiatives to support practical learning and artistic development within the School of Liberal Arts at Alliance University.
