Alliance University Celebrates the Heritage of Mother Languages on International Mother Language Day
27 February, 2026

Alliance University observed International Mother Language Day with a formal celebration that highlighted the importance of linguistic diversity and cultural continuity. The event brought together faculty members, students, and distinguished guests to reflect on the value of preserving and practising mother languages in contemporary society. The programme was organised by the Kannada Sangha, the Department of Language and Literature, and the Department of Student Support Services.
Keynote Address on Linguistic Heritage
The celebration featured Dr. C. Ramaswami, eminent linguist and former Professor and Head of the Department of Kannada, University of Madras, as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, Dr. Ramaswami spoke about the depth and diversity of India’s linguistic heritage. He emphasised that languages must be nurtured with care and responsibility, and he encouraged the audience to view this responsibility as a shared commitment rather than a burden.
He also stressed the importance of practical language use, particularly in the context of Kannada. He noted that a language remains relevant when it is actively used in daily life, education, and cultural practices. He invited the audience to reflect on language within the wider frameworks of district, state, and national identity, and to recognise its role in shaping social and cultural belonging.
Literary Release
The programme also included the release of a translated literary work. Kuvempu’s Shreeramayanadarshanam was presented in its Malayalam translation by Dr. A. M. Sreedharan. This moment reflected the spirit of dialogue between languages and cultures. The translation served as a reminder that literature can move across linguistic boundaries while retaining its meaning and relevance.
Perspectives from Distinguished Speakers
Several speakers contributed to the discussion by sharing their views on language and cultural identity. Dr. Liju Jacob Kuriakose spoke about the importance of linguistic diversity and encouraged the learning of indigenous languages of the regions in which we live. Dr. Ratnakar Acharya reflected on the richness of regional dialects and their place in everyday communication.
Dr. A. M. Sreedharan shared insights from his experience translating Ramayanadarshanam into Malayalam and explained the responsibility involved in carrying literary meaning from one language to another. Dr. Akshay A. Dhume also spoke about the broader linguistic diversity of India and the need to understand it within a larger cultural framework.
Recognition and Conclusion
An important part of the programme was the Prize Distribution ceremony. Winners of competitions organised by the Kannada Sangha and NSS in the days leading up to International Mother Language Day were recognised with medals and certificates. The ceremony acknowledged the active participation of students in promoting linguistic activities on campus.
The event began with an invocation song rendered by Ms. Thanu and was anchored by Ms. Vibha Purohit. It concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Vivekanand Sajjan. Deans, Heads of Departments, Faculty Coordinators including Prof. Kasaniya Naik and Dr. Mithun Hanumesh, along with faculty members from various departments, were present on the occasion.
The celebration provided a meaningful space for reflection on the role of mother languages in shaping identity, thought, and community life. Through dialogue, literature, and student participation, the University reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and practising linguistic heritage in an inclusive academic environment.
