Dr. Thiyagarajan Subramanian
Associate Professor
Alliance School of Applied Engineering
Dr. Thiyagarajan Subramanian is an accomplished researcher and academician in the field of renewable energy technologies, with a strong focus on sustainable solutions for internal combustion (IC) engines and emission reduction. His professional goal is to develop innovative, low-carbon technologies that address growing energy demands while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Dr. Thiyagarajan holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from SRM University (2019). He also earned an M.S. in Automotive Engineering from the University of Bath, United Kingdom (2009), and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from SRM University with a CGPA of 8.77.
His core research interests include after-treatment systems for emission reduction in IC engines, biofuels as alternatives to diesel in CI engines, waste-to-energy conversion, and the application of gaseous fuels in heavy-duty tractor engines. Dr. Thiyagarajan possesses extensive hands-on experience in dual-fuel engines, combustion analysis, fuel property testing, and engine modeling. He has worked on advanced techniques such as selective and non-selective catalytic reduction systems, oxy-fuel combustion, electrochemical pre-combustion capture systems, and hydrogen utilization in CI engines.
Dr. Thiyagarajan has led and completed several funded research projects under SRM Research Grants and Seed Funding. These include the utilization of low-viscosity, low-cetane fuels in tractor engines, waste-to-fuel conversion, closed-cycle hydrogen production using exhaust heat, electromagnet-based fuel reforming systems, biocatalyst-based after-treatment technologies, and optical combustion analysis using Visioscope. His research portfolio also includes pioneering work on hydrogen and ammonia co-firing with biofuels in heavy-duty engines.
With over a decade of teaching experience, Dr. Thiyagarajan served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Automobile Engineering at SRM University from 2011 to 2021. He has taught core subjects such as IC Engines and Systems, Alternate Fuels, Automotive Pollution and Control, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and Intellectual Property Rights. He has also contributed actively to academic administration as a placement coordinator and convener of the Automobile Engineers’ Association.
Beyond academia, Dr. Thiyagarajan has industry experience as a Maintenance Engineer at Essar Steels and as a Senior Research Engineer at Sankar Sealing Systems. He is a reviewer for leading international journals published by Springer, Elsevier, and Taylor & Francis, and has served as a Guest Editor for Environmental Science and Pollution Research. Since 2021, he has been the Founder of the startup Mirage Mechanics, focused on innovative engineering solutions.
Dr. Thiyagarajan is a member of SAE India, the Indian Science Congress Association, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and continues to contribute actively to research, innovation, and sustainable engineering education.
