Dr. Ruma Shil

Dr. Ruma Shil, a Grade Artist of Doordarshan Kendra and lifelong learner of Kathak, began her artistic journey at the tender age of four under the tutelage of Late Dr . Umasankar Chakraborty of the Lucknow Gharana. Her passion led her to pursue formal education in dance and music at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya (IKSVV), Khairagarh — Asia’s first music and arts university — where she trained under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Mandvi Singh, mastering both the Raigarh and Lucknow Gharanas. A recipient of Gold Medals in B.A. and M.A., she completed her PhD in Kathak Dance in 2017 under Dr Mandvi Singh’s supervision.

Dr. Shil continues her advanced training under the renowned Vidushi Saswati Sen and has received guidance from eminent maestros such as Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Rajan Gangani, and Pt. Ram Mohan Mishra. Her expertise spans Kathak performance, choreography, pedagogy, and research, enriched by professional training in Classical Music, Tabla, and Painting.

She has performed extensively at prestigious national festivals, directed numerous dance productions, and conducted workshops across India. As the Founder and Director of Nritya Nikunj Centre for Kathak Dance under Vedang Foundation, Bangalore.Her student got the National scholarship by CCRT under Ministry of culture India.  she is deeply committed to preserving and propagating Indian classical dance among diverse communities.

Presently serving as Assistant Professor (Kathak Dance) at Alliance University, Bangalore, Dr Shil also mentors students as a research guide. Her scholarly interests include Kathak pedagogy, Indian aesthetics, and the interdisciplinary study of performing arts.

Dr Ruma Shil  is engaged as an Examiner/ Evaluator/Lecturer/ Moderator/ BOS member/ conducting Workshops in Reputed universities, colleges and Schools in India.

Recognized with multiple honors ,Dr. Ruma Shil embodies the harmony of tradition and innovation in Indian classical arts.
